Consequently, now is a better time than ever to work in e-commerce.
Tips and ideas for designing e-commerce websites
These days, you must get on board with the ecommerce website train if you’re selling anything, be it salad dressing, footwear, or something else entirely. With the correct website design, you may increase sales, expand your consumer base, and establish your brand with an e-commerce site.
When developing an e-commerce website, web design is essential. Using the appropriate colors, fonts, images, phrases, and visuals to persuade visitors to make a purchase is the cornerstone of effective e-commerce site design. Your e-commerce website design should showcase your store in the best possible light, draw in new customers, and offer an excellent user experience.
Therefore, your website must not only feel and look fantastic, but also encourage users to take action and, you know, purchase your items. What is the best way to create an online store that will have merchandise flying off your virtual shelves?
The following list of the top 11 e-commerce web design suggestions can assist you in growing your store:
1. Keep it Simple
“KISS” stands for “keep it simple, stupid,” and it’s one of the most important guidelines to remember while designing an online store.
In the realm of e-commerce website design, simplicity is invariably preferable. The more components you include on the page (ads! banners! colors ALL THE POP-UPS!), the more it detracts from the goal of the website, which is to close a deal.
Your e-commerce website doesn’t need a ton of bells and whistles because they just serve as a distraction. Make sure your design is uncluttered, straightforward, and puts the sale front and center.

2. Make Branding a Priority
People prefer to shop at well-known companies when they shop online rather than at anonymous e-commerce sites that appear to be a front for credit card fraud.
Giving your branding careful thought is essential if you want to develop the kind of trust that will enable your e-commerce business to generate significant sales. Similar to the DNA of your e-commerce company, your branding expresses who you are as a business, what you stand for, and how you distinguish yourself from the competition. It also greatly influences audience engagement and sales.
Take the time to establish your brand and then include it in your design if you want to get the most out of your e-commerce design. It’s acceptable to be unsure of your brand identity! Before you start designing, you need only take some time to reflect on your business. Pose yourself queries such as:
- Which three terms would you use to best sum up my brand?
- What distinguishes my brand from other online retailers?
- What sets us apart from our competitors in the market?
Knowing who you are will help you incorporate it into your e-commerce site’s branding. That branding, too? It will increase audience trust and result in significant revenue growth.
3. Think like a website visitor
You must consider your target if you want the design of your e-commerce website to resonate with them. In the end, there are just a few things that your potential customers look for in an online store: a well-designed, user-friendly website that makes the purchasing procedure simple, uncomplicated, and easy.
And you should give them those things if you want your online store to be successful.
Consider your visitor from their point of view when you are designing. Which style of arrangement will be the most user-friendly for them? How can you arrange your products such that the final consumer can understand them? How can the checkout procedure be made simpler?
By adopting a customer-centric mindset, you can predict the requirements and desires of your online shoppers and tailor your website to fulfill their demands.
4. Use color to your advantage
It takes more thought to choose the colors for your e-commerce website than merely deciding that red is your favorite color and making everything red. If you know the psychology of color, you can take advantage of this incredibly strong technique to your advantage and increase sales significantly.
Using color inspiration to your advantage is essential if you want visitors to convert to your e-commerce site. For instance, use a vivid color like red to draw attention to the purchase button and encourage them to make a purchase. Color psychology states that the color red evokes sentiments of passion and excitement, which are what motivate people to spend money. Studies have shown that changing a button’s color to red can boost conversion rates by an astounding 34%.
Alternatively, you might use blue in your website’s design to increase credibility. Not only is blue a color that appeals to all people, but studies have also shown that it fosters sentiments of trust, which is why businesses use it so frequently (more than half of all logos include some shade of blue).
The bottom line is that color is one of the most potent elements in your design toolkit, and with the right application, it can significantly influence the look and feel of your e-commerce design.
5. Use high-quality images
photos boost conversions, as is well known in the field of web design (a recent case study demonstrated that adding more relevant photos to a website design increased conversions by over 40%). And in the case of e-commerce, that is much more accurate.
Nobody will purchase a product without first seeing it. You must provide high-quality product photographs to your customers to convince them to purchase your goods.
Gaining quality photos of each of your products—as well as photos of them taken from a variety of perspectives—will help you gain your client’s confidence and trust. They are more inclined to buy if they have faith in their ability to understand what they are purchasing. However, people will be less inclined to buy if there are no photographs of the goods they want to buy, or if there is only one poor-quality image, which will cause your conversion rates to plummet.
Make sure you have a ton of excellent photos of whatever you’re offering on your e-commerce website. Your conversions will be appreciated.
6. Make your content scannable
We have bad news for you: no one will read the lengthy descriptions you spend days writing for the items on your e-commerce website.
Studies reveal that the majority of online users only peruse around 20% of the content on any given page. They scan the text for important information rather than reading the content word for word; therefore, if you want to make your point and increase sales at the same time, you must make your content scannable.
Organize your information into a readable structure by segmenting it into sections, such as product descriptions, blog entries, or a “about us” page. Shorten your phrases and paragraphs, highlight important information with bolding, and divide lengthy text blocks into manageable chunks with bulleted lists.
Your audience is more likely to retain your primary messaging and increase your chances of closing a deal if your content is easy to skim.
7. Make it look professional
An e-commerce website is built around asking customers to make purchases from you. Consequently, you are requesting that they divulge private information, such as their credit card details. which, if your website doesn’t look professional, people won’t feel at ease doing.
If you want to establish trust with your clients, you have to invest in a quality website, and if you want your e-commerce store to flourish, you have to grow that trust.
What does the term “professional” mean? Every page should have the same typeface, color scheme, and footer design. Every button and link on your products should function. Your site’s design should not appear to have been lifted from Geocities in the year 1997, nor should your photographs appear to have been taken with an outdated iPhone 5.
The bottom line is that you need to project a sense of professionalism to your clients if you want them to take you seriously. A well-designed website is the only way to accomplish this.
8. Use social proof
Another strategy to develop that crucial trust? Social evidence.
When you’re creating your e-commerce website, try to find methods to highlight the favorable reviews you’ve had from previous clients. Include a ratings section in your product listing so that customers may leave as many 5-star evaluations as possible. Include a testimonial area with client images and a few sentences describing how wonderful their experience working with you was. Request product reviews from your consumers, along with their likes and dislikes, and post the reviews to your blog.
Your website’s credibility will increase and your conversion rate will rise in proportion to the number of visitors who perceive, through reviews or testimonials, that other customers have had a pleasant experience shopping on your site.
9. Make categories easy to navigate
Awkward product pages are the fastest way to lose a sale. Visitors will quickly leave your website and head directly to a competitor’s website if they have to navigate through 10 menu options to discover the product they’re looking for.
Make it simple to navigate through your product pages and categories. Make it simple for your customers to browse your product selection and apply filters based on attributes like color, size, or category. The more user-friendly your categories and pages are, the easier it will be for your customers to find what they’re looking for and complete a transaction.

10. Make checkout a breeze
Recall how we stated that awkward product pages are the fastest way to lose a sale. A cumbersome checkout system is undoubtedly a close second.
Customers will leave your website if the checkout process is difficult. You must make purchasing from you as easy, painless, and uncomplicated as you can if you want customers to do business with you.
Make the design of your checkout page clear, uncomplicated, and user-friendly. Allow users to check out as guests or register for an account on your website. Make sure that every step of the process is understood, including the information that must be entered and the information that you need to process the purchase, the various shipping options and their associated costs, and what to do if an issue arises with their order or if they need to return it. Send your consumers to a confirmation page after their purchase is complete so they can be assured everything went through.
In summary, simplify the checkout process if you want customers to buy from you.
11. Make it responsive
It’s official: mobile internet browsing has eclipsed desktop browsing as the most popular method… And shopping is a part of that.
Let’s keep this brief: you must ensure that your website design is responsive if you want to attract customers who prefer to purchase on mobile phones or tablets. If not, you might not be able to persuade those important mobile visitors that your website is the best place for them to complete a purchase.
Conclusion
You can build an aesthetically pleasing, intuitive, and incredibly successful online store that increases customer engagement and boosts sales by incorporating these suggestions into your e-commerce design plan.
