To set up a mega menu in Shopify, build a nested menu in your Shopify admin under Content, then Menus, with a parent item, child items that act as column headings and grandchild links. Then use a theme that supports mega navigation, or install a mega menu app, to display it as a large panel. Many themes do not include a mega menu by default.
Key Takeaways
- Shopify's Help Center says you manage menus from Content, then Menus, in the admin. The earlier version of this post said Online Store, then Navigation, which is out of date.
- A mega menu look is usually built with three levels: a parent, child items as column headings and grandchild links. Third-party sources say the header usually shows three tiers.
- Many Shopify themes do not include a mega menu by default, so check your theme's documentation or use an app.
- App prices in October 2026: Buddha Mega Menu is free or $9.95 a month, and Globo's navigation app is free or $12.90 to $17.90 a month.
- Keep the menu small, crawlable and fast. Test it on mobile, with a keyboard and with a screen reader.
What is a Shopify mega menu and why use one?
A mega menu is a large dropdown panel that shows many links in columns, often with images or featured products. It helps stores with big catalogs let shoppers reach deep categories in one click. It can also add clutter if it holds too many links.
- Faster navigation for large catalogs and clear category groups.
- Merchandising space for featured collections, banners or best sellers.
- Internal links to important collections, which helps both users and search engines when links are real HTML links.
The earlier version quoted an 18.5% conversion gain from an undated source. We removed it because navigation results depend on your store. Test your own changes.
- Open the menu editor. In your Shopify admin go to Content, then Menus. Shopify's Help Center describes this as where you add, remove, change and view links and menus.
- Create or open a menu. Edit your main menu, or add a new one. Give it a clear title.
- Add the top-level items. These are your main categories, such as Men, Women and Sale. Link them to collections, pages, products or other content.
- Add child items and nest them. Drag items under a parent to nest them. For a mega menu, child items usually serve as column headings.
- Add grandchild links. Nest links under each column heading. A typical layout has three levels.
- Save the menu.
- Choose where the menu appears. In your theme settings, pick the menu for the header or the section that supports it.
- Preview and test on desktop and mobile.
Menu labels and the exact steps can differ slightly by theme and Shopify version, so use Shopify's Help Center as the reference. The Help Center page we read did not state a limit on nesting levels or number of items. A Pixel Union article, which is undated, says the header usually shows three tiers, a collection sidebar two, and footer menus no nesting (Pixel Union). Check your theme's documentation.

Some themes include a mega navigation feature. Theme documentation from Fluorescent says a mega nav needs a nested menu with three levels of links, with the second level used as column titles, and Omelatte documents a mega menu block (Fluorescent). A 2026 guide reports that most Shopify themes do not include a mega menu by default and names Impulse and Prestige as themes with built-in support. We did not test them. Check your theme's documentation for a mega menu section or block, because a native feature is usually lighter than an app.
| App | Pricing on its listing (Oct 2026) | Rating on listing | Notes |
| Buddha Mega Menu | Free plan. Mega Zen $9.95 per month or $95.52 per year, 14-day trial. | 4.8 from 617 reviews | Free plan limits featured content to five collections and five products. Paid adds tabbed submenus, featured product images, videos and countdown timers. |
| Globo (navigation app) | Free Basic. Growth $12.90 per month or $129 per year. Pro $17.90 per month or $179 per year. 7-day trial on paid plans. | 4.9 from 1,703 reviews | Free plan includes mega and dropdown menus, a mobile menu and drag-and-drop building. Higher plans add market-specific menus, banners and analytics. |
The earlier version listed three other apps (Qikify Smart Menu, Magic Menu and Stories, and Hukify) with prices and ratings that we could not re-check, so we removed their figures. Ratings are shown on each listing and change, and they say nothing about fit for your store. Before you install an app, check how much JavaScript it adds, whether it keeps links crawlable, and whether it supports your theme and languages.

Theme feature, app or custom code?
| Option | Best when | Trade-off |
| Native theme mega menu | Your theme includes it and the design fits | Limited layout options |
| Mega menu app | You want images, tabs, banners or analytics without coding | Monthly fee and extra scripts that may slow pages |
| Custom code | You need a specific design or performance control | Needs a developer and testing after theme updates |

What are the best practices?
- Keep it focused. Show the most important categories, not every collection.
- Use clear labels that match what shoppers search for.
- Group logically, for example by product type, then by use or brand.
- Use real links. Search engines and assistive tools need standard HTML links, not scripts only.
- Design for mobile. Most mega menus become accordions or drawers on phones, so test them.
- Support keyboard and screen readers. Check focus order, labels and the ability to close the menu.
- Watch performance. Compare page speed before and after, especially if you use an app.
- Measure. Track clicks, search use and conversion after changes, and test one change at a time.
How do you fix common problems?
| Problem | What to check |
| Menu does not show as a mega menu | Your theme may not support it. Check the theme docs or use an app. |
| Only two levels show | The theme area may limit levels. Check where the menu is assigned. |
| Menu is slow or jumpy | Remove unused app features and test without other apps |
| Links look wrong on mobile | Check mobile menu settings in the theme or the app |
| Changes do not appear | Save the menu, check the theme setting and clear any cache |

What changed from the earlier version of this post?
The November 2023 version used an outdated admin path (Online Store, then Navigation), gave vague steps ("Here goes the primary menu item"), listed five apps with undated prices, misspelled one app's name, quoted an 18.5% conversion statistic from an undated source, ignored themes that include mega navigation, had no troubleshooting, mobile or accessibility guidance and no FAQ. This update uses current menu steps, theme and app options with listing data, best practices and troubleshooting.
