Artificial Intelligence has become the need of the hour. No longer an option, it is rather a necessity that companies can’t afford to avoid if they actually want to see multiplied growth and profitability for their businesses. There is no doubt that worldwide government budgets are allocated specifically for AI models.
The real question here is not the grants or the money allocated, but who works on this technology? Are they humans or robots? The answer is no, they are humans who work on learning AI and are often termed as AI engineers. Furthermore, you should also know about the cost of hiring AI engineers in 2026. This will help you deploy your projects more efficiently and make informed decisions. Keep reading this blog to find out the cost to hire AI engineers in the year 2026 and the AI engineers’ hourly rate. Moreover, we will see how Appic Softwares, the prominent AI development company, can help you in this.
Who are AI Engineers?
Hiring AI engineers’ costs depend on the level of your project, but before that, it’s crucial to understand who AI engineers are. Well, they are humans just like you and me, who have studied computer science and hold professional expertise. They use AI and machine learning techniques for developing applications and systems that improve the organisation’s efficiency, costs, and decision-making. Apart from this, there are generative AI developers as well who specialise in designing, training, and deploying AI models such as GANs, VAEs, and LLMs for creating content that includes text, images, and audio. Netflix and YouTube are great examples of AI engineering where machine learning makes personalised suggestions based on your preferences and behaviour.
AI Engineers Responsibilities
Build and manage the AI development and production infrastructure
Implement statistical analysis and interpret the results
Automate AI infrastructure that helps data science teams
Develop AI models from scratch
Convert ML models to APIs that integrate with other applications
Collaborate between teams for AI adoption
What are the Skill Sets of AI Developers?
It’s not necessarily correct to say that if you have the degree, you know the job. This statement is completely irrelevant to say because a degree just builds a basic foundation for your profession. To excel and see growth in your professional career, you need to have skills that are expected and valued by organisations and IT companies. They play a major role in determining the cost of hiring AI engineers. To help you with the same, here is the list of necessary skill sets you should have if you want to work in the domain of artificial intelligence.
Technical Skills
Programming: Python is the most underrated and highly used programming language in AI development. If you are targeting to work on building high-performance AI systems, then you should pick an additional language with Python. It can be either Go, Rust or Java.
AI/ML and Deep Learning Frameworks: Our AI developers and engineers should be well-versed in training, optimising, and deploying AI models. For research and flexibility, PyTorch is preferred. TensorFlow is often used for production environments, and scikit-learn is used for classical ML.
Language Learning Models (LLMs) and Generative AI: In 2026, the market has taken a significant shift, and every generative AI developer role demands hands-on experience, or you can say practical experience. They need to be exceptional with models like GPT, Claude, Gemini, and other open-source alternatives. If any hiring team asks for fine-tuning and prompt engineering, they should be able to answer such questions.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) or Computer Vision:Hire AI engineer costs vary if you are not aware of building AI chatbots, content intelligence tools, document processing, or visual recognition systems.
Non-Technical Skills
Product Thinking: The research and product ideology describe whether you will be able to establish a connection between business and users, or just build models.
Communication Skills: Communication skills are a key element when hiring remote AI developers. The developers should be proficient in communicating technical aspects in a simpler form to a non-technical stakeholder.
Problem-Solving Skills: You can have polished degrees, but if you lack problem-solving skills, you may not be able to sustain in the tech world in the long run.

Hourly Rates For Hiring AI Engineers (Contractor / Freelance Model)
If you are not looking to hire dedicated AI engineers or a full-time AI developer for your project, then in that case you can opt for a freelance/contractor model. Here is the cost breakdown or charges of this business model:
Traditional ML and data science: $25-$50/hr
Deep learning and computer vision: $40-$75/hr
Generative AI (LLMs, transformers, RAG): $50-$90/hr
By looking at these figures anuyonce can see the price parity between India and other countries. In India, you will get reliable and productive AI engineers, that too at a budget that is hard to find in other countries.
Cost of Hiring Specialised AI Engineers
What’s the difference between hiring AI engineers and hiring specialisied ai engineers or developers? The answer is exact: skills. Generative AI engineers, developers, and LLM specialists charge 15-20% higher than general engineers. Their expertise, knowledge, and practical exposure altogether are way more advanced. This does not mean anyone can charge unreasonable costs for their services. Therefore, having an idea of market rates gives an edge and saves from getting fooled. Here are the costs or charges of hiring specialised engineers in India:
General ML engineer: $15,000-$25,000/year
NLP/LLM specialist: $20,000-$35,000/year
Computer vision engineer: $20,000-$30,000/year
Generative AI developer: $25,000-$40,000/year
MLOps engineer: $20,000-$35,000/year
The Hidden Hire AI Engineer Cost Most Companies Overlook
The base pay is only 60-70% of your actual cost. There are intangible costs as well, which are often overlooked. To ensure that you don’t miss out, prepare a budget in advance with a miscellaneous category in advance. Below are the hidden costs of hiring AI engineers that companies can’t avoid.
Statutory Benefits: The government schemes and financial planning for working employees roughly adds upto 15 -20% of your budget. For example, Provident Funds (PF), Employee State Insurance (ESI), and many more.
Recruitment Costs: Recruitment directly impacts the cost of hiring an AI engineer. Screening, technical rounds, and interviewing are all lengthy and costly procedures.
Retention: You cannot afford to lose your best employees. Therefore, retention costs itself goes upto 20-30%, which is an unavoidable measure if your employee is competent and credible towards the organisation.
