These days, e-commerce and global retail are flourishing. Online shopping is one of the most common activities among internet users globally, according to Statista. Retail e-commerce sales only hit $2.28 trillion in 2020, and by 2022, they are expected to have peaked at $5.4 trillion. Online sales are being launched by an increasing number of businesses, and e-commerce platforms are multiplying quickly.
Considering all of that, starting an online store might be challenging, particularly for novices. From developing an e-commerce platform to managing sales, e-commerce firms face several different obstacles. A comprehensive approach is necessary for all of these, encompassing a well-considered project management plan, a well-informed selection of project management (PM) techniques, and much more.
This article will explain the importance of e-commerce project management for a smooth e-commerce business launch, how to select an appropriate PM methodology, and the measures e-commerce organizations use to guarantee the projects’ steady progress.
What Is E-Commerce Project Management?
With unique characteristics, e-commerce project management is a subset of traditional project management. In essence, it is the process of putting different abilities, instruments, methods, and strategies to use while carrying out different tasks meant to facilitate the successful development of an e-commerce enterprise.
Although using tried-and-true traditional project management principles and techniques in e-commerce is far more difficult than in any other industry, e-commerce project management largely depends on them. While attempting to draw in new business and hold onto their current clientele, businesses must respond swiftly to shifts in the global, social, and business environments.
Challenges e-Commerce Businesses Face Without Project Management
In e-commerce, project managers (PMs) are responsible for overseeing numerous tasks. In addition to managing the creation and upkeep of the company’s e-commerce platform, they also have to keep a watch on the commercial development of their rivals, stay up to date on industry trends, and efficiently meet client expectations. Without a solid plan, it is impossible to build a clear vision for a firm in such conditions, much less produce high-quality leads.
Effective preparation and thoughtful selection of project management techniques and resources enable e-Commerce businesses to:
- Maintain your edge in the marketplace
- Organize internal corporate processes efficiently and meet deadlines
- Maintain pace with the rivals
- Get favorable reviews from clients and boost revenue
- Implement technology breakthroughs successfully and make sure your company grows sustainably.
- Make more money
What Are Popular Project Management Methodologies?
Businesses may minimize a lot of unknowns at the outset of an e-commerce project by using a carefully selected methodology. However, it’s frequently very difficult to modify one methodology for use in e-commerce. Managers like to combine many PM techniques to better tailor them to the current business requirements.
The most popular project management techniques in
e-commerce are listed here.
1. Agile
The agile technique is ideal for projects whose requirements change often. Agile methodology divides a product into manageable chunks and develops iteratively. The team reviews the outcomes following each iteration of development and decides what new features to incorporate to improve the product’s ability to satisfy customers.
The agile approach is popular among PMs because it enables them to get feedback from clients at every stage of the development process. However, it is far more difficult to predict the product’s final state throughout the development phase.
2. Scrum
It is normal practice to design complicated products using the Scrum framework. Scrum improves team member communication by enabling them to share information about current procedures and pool their resources to produce high-caliber outputs. To do this, the software development team breaks the process down into weekly sprints and gets together for brief daily stand-ups. Based on user feedback, the team determines which features to deploy next after reviewing the product results every week.
Since the Scrum process emphasizes teamwork, every team member must possess sufficient product-building experience and be able to quickly address any difficulties that may arise.
3. Kanban
Like Scrum, Kanban is a simple approach. There are also sprints and a lot of talking involved. In the meantime, project teams have more development autonomy with Kanban. In addition to having fewer objectives and shorter sprints, the team members can implement any product modifications during the sprints.
Project teams use dedicated boards labeled “To do,” “Progress,” and “Done” with stickers bearing tasks to implement Kanban. Throughout the product creation process, the participants can monitor the progress and make any necessary adjustments by rearranging stickers between categories.
4. Lean
Project teams can more quickly build the product that best meets customer needs with the use of the Lean methodology. It eliminates every superfluous feature and focuses solely on the functional components. To do this, the team creates a minimal viable product (MVP) and updates it throughout the development process. By doing this, e-commerce companies can start a project with a product that is already functional and devote time and resources to improving it so that the customer receives the greatest value.
PMs should be aware that the Lean methodology changes the focus from the team to the value of the product. Consequently, there won’t be much space for frequent meetings or training.
5. Waterfall
The tried-and-true Waterfall Methodology is ideal for projects with precise specifications. The team follows the product roadmap that the PM creates at the outset of the project without making any changes.
PMs may easily determine the budget and set dates for product development by utilizing this process. However, it’s challenging to make any adjustments to the product throughout the development phase, and the results might not live up to the frequently shifting expectations of end users. Waterfall is therefore widely utilized to develop “mission-critical” or small projects.
Ecommerce Project Planning Explained Step by Step
An organization engaged in e-commerce must have a comprehensive project management strategy after deciding on its PM technique. Project planning assists companies in avoiding typical strategic blunders, maintaining organization, and staying within schedule and price constraints.
The following actions can be taken by an e-commerce business to guarantee the accomplishment of its projects:
- pick the project management methodology (PM) that works best for the e-commerce project; e-commerce projects can be made more flexible and manageable by combining multiple methodologies.

- begin creating an MVP; in the early stages of software development, an MVP enables organizations to obtain insightful input on client demands;
- track the progress of the project: after work begins, it’s critical to maintain control over the development processes; to do this, project managers must precisely regulate time, scope, and budget; choosing the appropriate communication tools and efficient software is one of the greatest ways to accomplish it;
- deploy an e-commerce app and get feedback: Bringing an e-commerce product to market is always a significant milestone for a company. At this point, it’s critical to identify the next steps in the product development process and get user feedback.
- After a product launch, companies must specify the next stages of development before they can test the product, release updates, and return to planning. This means that they must keep iterating and testing ideas.
