You may wonder, what’s current in project management. We spend a lot of time investigating and responding to that question because we are the developers of a project management application.
Keeping up with trends can be challenging in the ever-evolving field of project management. To assist you in honing your project management techniques, we have compiled a list of the top project management trends for 2023.
What are the top project management trends in 2023?
In just the last few decades, project management offices (PMOs) have progressed from whiteboards and hand-drawn project maps to sophisticated software solutions and automation.
Project managers need to become adaptive because project management is a constantly changing field. A lot of these trends are the result of project management teams adapting to a workforce that is becoming more automated and remote.
The top seven trends for 2023 are listed here, along with advice on how to take advantage of them.
1. Automation and artificial intelligence (AI)
AI is currently widely used. As ChatGPT and similar solutions gain widespread attention, project managers are starting to consider integrating AI into their daily operations.
Although ChatGPT is still in its infancy, project managers should be aware of its capabilities and keep an eye out for its future development.
83% of executives say AI is a top priority for their company, according to Forbes.
Another emerging trend that project managers should watch out for is automation. Even though automation is not a new concept, project managers can greatly benefit from its convergence of capabilities with integrations and artificial intelligence. Let’s examine this.
How this trend can be mastered by project managers
Project managers can create an initial timeline or project budget, answer questions about the project, and summarize reports using ChatGPT. These solutions won’t be very sophisticated right now, but as technology develops, these shortcuts might be even quicker. The first step is to learn how to use AI tools.
Project managers can always benefit from automation, but in 2023, hyper-automation will be a major trend to watch. Hyperautomation improves on current automation by utilizing AI in addition to the following methods:
- Machine Learning (ML) in scheduling, resource allocation, risk management, and other areas.
- RPA stands for robotic process automation, which automates repetitive tasks and improves data entry accuracy.
- Automated documentation for meeting minutes, compliance standards, and status reports.
- Text can be extracted from pictures, infographics, and handwritten notes using optical character recognition (OCR).
This generation of project managers needs to know when and how to automate tasks. You can accomplish tasks more quickly and concentrate on larger-picture work by automating simple tasks.
2. Adjusting to flexible schedules
The majority of workers still prefer to work from home, even though some leadership teams are pushing for workers to go back to the office.
For project managers managing distributed teams, working from home creates a different dynamic. The good news is that many of us have been doing it since 2020, so it’s not insurmountable. The expansion of flexible work options is the key development to keep an eye out for.
While there is a growing demand for flexible scheduling and four-day workweeks, remote work seems to be here to stay. Additionally, managers will have to modify their expectations to retain staff in a competitive labor market.
This year, seven out of ten workers plan to request that their employer take into account a four-day workweek.
How this trend can be mastered by project managers
The trend of four-day workweeks and ongoing remote work could have the greatest effect on the project management sector. Tighter deadlines, redesigned project scope, and more effective project planning are required for a reduced remote workweek.
Project managers need to embrace flexibility and realize that lower outputs don’t always result
from shorter workdays. A UK trial of a four-day workweek revealed that shorter workweeks could increase output.
The project manager’s job depends more and more on task delegation and smooth, asynchronous communication in an era of remote work and flexible scheduling. You will find great value in time and activity tracking tools.
Our recommendation? Avoid resisting it. While more tolerant and adaptable leaders succeed, managers who reject flexible work arrangements risk falling behind. Remember that asynchronous work and compressed workweeks can boost output, stave off burnout, and foster better teamwork. Keep an optimistic outlook.
3. Leadership with emotional intelligence (EQ)
Project managers need to have strong leadership abilities, and emotionally intelligent leadership, or EQ is the newest trend in leadership.
Global leaders are becoming more and more in need of emotional intelligence, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs report.
EQ is all about being a leader through motivation, self-awareness, and empathy. Contemporary leaders understand that inspiring and motivating their team comes from empathetic leadership. Indeed, employees are 400% less likely to switch jobs if their manager has a high EQ, according to IMPACT research.
We are moving past authoritarian leadership in our society and pushing workers to the point of burnout. You need to look no further than Twitter’s recent leadership to see just how important EQ is.
Since Elon Musk took over and openly dismantled the core principles of emotionally intelligent leadership, Twitter’s workforce has decreased by 80%.
Embracing empathy in leadership and leveraging your team’s strengths will increase output and enhance the work environment for all involved.
How to master this trend as a project manager:
Project management is more than just finishing work on schedule; it’s also about leading your team. Budget management and project schedules are more clearly defined than people management. EQ is useful in this situation.
To assign tasks and identify strengths and weaknesses, project managers must have a thorough understanding of how their team operates. Managers should modify team culture, deadlines, and leadership styles based on employees’ responses.
Monitoring work-life balance and finding out about team members’ stressors is a useful management strategy. Make the most of your one-on-one meetings by asking about their general happiness and mental health in addition to project-related topics.
4. Management of Change
Project management with an emphasis on managing people and adapting to change while finishing a project is known as change management.
Although it’s not a particularly novel look, leaders have been adopting it more frequently lately. Project managers of the future will need to embrace change management concepts to succeed.
While working remotely has its advantages, it can also lead to scheduling conflicts and communication breakdowns on occasion. Teams can manage projects without missing deadlines by implementing change management techniques.
How this trend can be mastered by project managers
Managers must be adaptable, even if it means repeating themselves. Dividing projects into manageable parts allows managers to make quick adjustments to timelines and budgets. This is one way to become an expert at change management.
How often do things go according to plan exactly? Stronger change management abilities enable managers to quickly adjust projects and adjust to a variety of potential disruptions.
It is imperative to have the capacity to stay adaptable, solicit input from both internal and external stakeholders, and modify project limitations.
5. Project management in a hybrid style
Another shift in the market is companies experimenting with various project management techniques at the same time to strike the ideal mix.
Conventional project management is frequently combined with alternative techniques such as:
- Agile: The well-liked approach to people and change management that puts the delivery of functional software ahead of thorough process documentation.
- Waterfall: Work moves through different stages of design, development, and testing one after the other in this phase-oriented project management approach.
- Scrum is an iterative project management methodology with a focus on prompt delivery.
Managers have been incorporating some of the conventional techniques they employed before Agile’s rise in popularity into their Agile approach. Let’s examine this.
How this trend can be mastered by project managers
Teams can more effectively tailor their project management strategy to their industry and areas of strength by using a hybrid approach. Teams are trying to concentrate on flexibility to drive project success rather than just Agile.
Try a variety of hybrid approaches to see which combination produces the best results and works best for your team to master this trend.
For simpler tasks, consider employing a traditional project management methodology like Waterfall; for more complex or urgent projects, consider using Agile or Scrum.
6. Increasing intergenerational and multicultural teams’ ability to work together
The rapidly evolving corporate culture is a result of baby boomers leaving the workforce. The way that the next generation views their jobs is changing, and managers are finding it difficult to adapt.
How this trend can be mastered by project managers
Project managers’ emotional intelligence is key to this trend. Since younger workers are increasingly prioritizing remote work, it also relates to the ability to manage a remote team with flexible schedules.
Managers must remember to balance the needs of their more seasoned staff members. Enter self-determined work and flexible work schedules. You can stay up to date with this trend without sacrificing your on-site culture by offering your team the option of working remotely or in the office.
Although managing a multicultural team can be difficult, it is worthwhile to be able to hire the best candidates from around the world. To support the success of a multicultural team, project managers need to develop their cultural intelligence and foster a respectful work environment.
7. Trends in Project Management Software
The greatest was reserved for last: trends in project management software. Selecting the appropriate software is essential, and new products are always hitting the market. A tool that can stay current with trends is what you need.
